I got my first pair of Chuck Taylor Converse when I was 15. I really wanted high tops, but I wanted a "girlie" pair, which is hard to find. I looked around for a long time before I finally found the "perfect pair." I found them at Mervyn's and much to my joy they were on sale!
I wore those suckers day and night for the first 3 months of owning them. I didn't even take them off for bedtime--no joke--I only took them off to bathe. And once I got out of the tub, right back on they went. I even wore them with long denim skirts to church!
I took care of those shoes like they were my babies. Every night I would spray them down with Goo-Gone and carefully wipe away and traces of mud, dirt or other nastiness. They looked brand new 24/7. Those poor things even endured the washing machine at least 3 times a week.
My family teased me constantly that they were my "idols." Of course, at the time, I denied it. But looking back on it now, they most certainly were my idols! At night, when I would take them off for a bath, they would sit next to the tub, just so I could watch them and make sure my family didn't sneak off with them...which they loved to do!
I'm not sure what eventually ended that craze, but I'm so glad I got over it. Since then, I've expanded my horizons and now have a collection of nearly every basic color and a few special colors as well, but those converse were and will always be my favorite.
I was reminded of them today, as I was digging through my shoe box. I pulled one out, and it was like two old lovers being reunited. A heavenly moment, really.
I wore them today and every time I looked down at my feet, I felt little bubbles of love inside my heart, towards these converse.
So...to show my dedication and love to these old faithful shoes, I decided to dedicate a whole blog post to them.
(I assure you all that I will not be sleeping with them on tonight, nor did I spray them down with goo-gone and I'm not even going to waste laundry soap or water on them to wash them! In fact, right now, my feet are as free as birds and my lovely old converse are back in my shoe box...where they will sit and dream about my feet until tomorrow, when we are once again reunited.)
I would also like to state: I didn't even take my own pictures of them!! I found these online, just to give you an idea of what these converse look like.
They are all brown with a light pink tongue and stripe down the back.
Even the lining is a girlie light pink. :)
Ahhh, I just love these shoes! I plan on never getting rid of them. I will be the annoying person who proudly wears duct tapes on their converse, just because they love them too much to throw away. Thankfully, my duct tape days are quiet a ways off. ...These shoes get primo care, unlike other people's converse!
